Campaigners lose litter bin battle
9:46am Wednesday 5th December 2012 in News
CALLS for the return of more than 300 litter bins which were controversially removed from York streets have failed.
City of York Council began moves to take away 349 bins – more than a third of the total number in the city – in June to save £40,000 a year on collection rounds, but 1,530 Fulford, Huntington and New Earswick residents signed a petition demanding a complete reversal of the cull.
The petition went before Coun David Levene, the council's cabinet member for environmental services, yesterday but the decision was made that any bins which were removed will only be replaced where it is deemed appropriate.
Opponents of the cull say it will lead to more litter, with the council saying it does not have the funding to retain all bins and it has not seen an increase in rubbish, while some have already been put back.

why have they removed the bins, is it so more folk get fined for littering, ycc are a joke, the city is a mess, and we are powerless to do any thing

Not everyone carries plastic bags around all the time to put their rubbish in.
You need bins at regular intervals, not walk miles before you see one. This council is utterly ridiculous and their short sighted policies are making this city into a litter strewn mess.

How are we supposed to have any respect for what they're doing when they can't apply any common sense to themselves.

Have they removed the litter bins or have they thrown them away? And if the latter, what into?
Maybe I'm in a minority, but I've never really had the need to walk around whilst pushing food into my face, and as such do not generate much litter in public. I am however a smoker, but have not had trouble finding suitable bins for the butts, and if there isn't one around it goes into a small box in pocket until I get home.
I'm fairly sure there are laws about public littering, maybe enforcement of those laws would ensure our streets remain clean.
