Cat rescued after 36 hours up tree in Beech Avenue, Holgate
10:41am Saturday 24th November 2012 in News
IT was a case of “second time lucky” for firefighters who rescued this cat from a tree in Holgate.
The fire brigade were called out to rescue the tabby cat at Beech Avenue in Holgate where resident David Williams took this photo.
Mr Williams said the cat had been up the tree for more than 36 hours and had survived the previous nights stormy weather. A previous rescue attempt on Thursday evening had to be called off due to bad weather. The cat was brought down yesterday and taken to the RSPCA to be chipped.

The fireman who attended were lovely and they made it clear that (obviously) they were only there to help as there were no other emergencies at that time; they would have left immediately if an emergency call had been received!
He also said that in his 19 years as a fireman this was the first 'cat up a tree' call that he had seen.
Cat was also reunited with its owners due to the fact that it had been chipped so the RSPCA were able to quickly trace them....shows the importance of getting your pets id chips.

...cats can climb thats how it got up the tree..
Their front legs are stronger and a lot more versatile than their hind legs, meaning that they can go up a lot more easily (or at any rate, under a lot more control) than they can go down: hence the 'Spider Cat' videos on YouTube showing them climbing up the side of tower blocks and so on. If you look at them carefully, you'll see that their front legs are doing 90% of the work (just as a human's arms do 90% of the work when climbing up a mountain), and their hind legs are really only there for balance. You won't find any videos of them going in the other direction!
Most cats are sensible and cautious enough to work this out and not climb up anywhere that is likely to be a one-way trip (unless the fire brigade help out). But occasionally you get a stupid one who isn't. Over the summer I had to get mine down from the garage roof (within range of an A-frame ladder so no fire brigade needed) after the neighbour's dog barked at him through the fence, and I guess he panicked. How he hell he made it up there I'll never know, but if I'd had a video camera handy at the time, the resulting YT footage would probably have got tens of thousands of hits by now!

Also, it would seem that readers of the Press website have to use their imagination to dream up what the cat looks like!!

I agree Magicman, it says 'this cat' as if referring to a photo. It may seem a non story but some people find it interesting enough to read, such as myself. ;-P
