A MANHUNT was under way in York last night after a hit-and-run crash that left a pedestrian in hospital with a badly broken leg.

The man was hit by a black Volvo outside the Tam O’Shanter pub in Lawrence Street during the evening rush-hour last night.

Three men ran from the Volvo along Lawrence Street towards the nearby Shell filling station and Nicholas Gardens, and police investigations were under way last night to try to find them.

The Volvo was left smashed against a bollard.

Police last night said it was not yet clear precisely what had happened.

The accident happened just before 5.20pm and the road heading out of town was closed for about two hours, leading to major tailbacks locally and knock-on disruption and delays across the city.

Louise Coxon, control room deployment manager for North Yorkshire Police, said there had been a number of witnesses who had spoken to officers at the scene and she said police had some suspects.
