1) THREE road junctions on The Mount in York will be closed when City of York Council carries out essential resurfacing works on The Mount next week.

Work will take place from Monday, is programmed to last five days and will take place between 7pm and 11pm.

The junctions of The Mount/Dalton Terrace, The Mount/Albemarle Rd and The Mount/Scarcroft Rd will be temporarily closed, while Traffic on The Mount will be managed with two way temporary traffic lights.


2) VANDALS have scratched a number of panels on the bodywork of a Mercedes Benz car in Main Street, Kirkbymoorside.

Police said anyone able to assist in investigating the “utterly pointless act of mindless vandalism”, which happened overnight between Saturday October 25 and Sunday October 26 to Call 101 or email andrew.hugill@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk if you have any information about regarding the incident.

3) FIREFIGHTERS have rescued a cat which was trapped inside a plastic recycling bank in Wingfield Way, Victoria Road, Beverley, early yesterday. The animal was released uninjured and left with the RSPCA.


4) YORK MP Julian Sturdy is supporting a campaign to help people who live in park homes keep warm over the winter.

Currently the homes don’t qualify the £140 annual Warm Homes Discount on their electricity bills, but the York Outer MP is campaigning on behalf of his constituents at Westfield Park, Acaster Malbis.

He said it was unacceptable that vulnerable elderly people, who choose to live in park homes because they are affordable, are discriminated against because of the type of dwelling they live in.

The Government has opened a public consultation on the matter, and an announcement is expected to be made after it closes on November 13.


5) MARGARET Sentamu, wife of the Archbishop of York, is backing a campaign by fair trade organisation Traidcraft calling for churches and their parishioners to show they care this festive season and send a personal Christmas greeting card to marginalised members of their community.

She said many people could not help feeling lonely and forgotten at Christmas.


6) A public stargazing event will take place in Dalby Forest organised by Scarborough and Ryedale Astronomical Society.

Taking place between 8pm and 10pm tomorrow, stargazers will be able to view the delights of the night sky from one of the darkest locations in the UK. The event is free.


7) A YORK taxi company has made a donation of three new wheelchairs to the therapies department at York Hospital.

The gift, which will help patients with their rehabilitation and planning their discharge home, was made by Fleetways taxis, which has a contract with York hospital and is regularly used by therapy services to carry out home assessment visits with patients.

Janet Laycock, senior occupational therapist at York Hospital, said: “We really appreciate this donation which will contribute to improving our patients’ stay in hospital and the service we provide. The Fleetways drivers provide an excellent service when it comes to loading our wheelchairs and equipment in and out of their taxis.”

Steve Close, Fleetways director, said: “Fleetways are proud to have a 40 year association with York Hospital and are pleased to provide this equipment for the therapies department to help their patients.”


8) CRAFTSMEN and women from York have been honoured for their achievements.

The York Guild of Building’s annual craftsmanship awards were held at Bedern Hall earlier this month. The Craftsmanship Award was won by Simpson York for the Cupola at Thimbleby Hall, the Master’s Award went to Stoneyard staff for the stone figure of St Peter on York Minster’s east end, and a number of Merit Awards were handed out.

Master of the Guild, Noel Shouksmith presented the awards and said: “The event grows more prestigious year by year, and the awards are greatly appreciated by the craftspeople.”


9) THE National Railway Museum has been nominated for a national award for its family facilities.

The museum is up for a Baby Changing Room Award, in a campaign sponsored by Sudocrem.

10) A GOOD landlord award scheme has been set up by students from the University of York, York St John University, York College and Askham Bryan College, in conjunction with City of York Council, to recognise and celebrate good student landlordship.

Student landlords and letting agents have been nominated by their tenants and shortlisted by a panel of local housing experts and student representatives for a range of awards such as Best Value for Money, Most Responsive Landlord, Best Quality Property, Managing Agent of the Year, Best Landlords of the Year, and an Outstanding Service Award.

Landlords and tenants were invited to a formal awards ceremony, attended by student representatives,councillors and the Lord Mayor, at the National Centre for Early Music in Walmgate.
