A LIST of the top ten places to visit in Yorkshire this autumn has been released.

The list was created by English Heritage, to encourage people to take advantage of the expected mild month before the weather is set to turn in November.

1) October is your last chance to see the Medieval floor tiles at Byland Abbey in Ryedale before they are covered over for the winter. The tiles are the most complete survival of a type that was formerly common in the north of England, in one of the foremost early Gothic buildings in the North.

2) Mount Grace Priory, in the Cleveland Hills, is thought to be the best Carthusian priory in England.

3) More than 3,000 years of history is on display at Scarborough Castle, along with far reaching views of both bays of the seaside town.

4) Rievaulx Abbey’s third abbot, St Aelred, said "Everywhere peace, everywhere serenity", and the hustle and bustle of life are drowned out by the peace at the Helmsley abbey.

5) Roche Abbey in Maltby, South Yorkshire, is surrounded by many dog walks, set in a valley landscaped by architect Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.

6) The 1940s War Weekend in Pickering includes free access and activities at Pickering Castle with a Living History camp set up by the East Yorkshire Regiment who will perform drill and rifle firing and other activities.

7) The York Cold War Bunker is a preserved moment frozen in time, which would have monitored nuclear explosions and fallout in the Yorkshire region and was in service from 1961 to 1991.

8) A host of activities will be on offer at Whitby Abbey throughout October, including Medieval Spooky Fun Week, a Dracula Spooky Trail and after-hours, The Illuminated Abbey.

9) Brodsworth Hall & Gardens in South Yorkshire will also take part in Halloween events during half term, with Victorian characters coming to life throughout the day, and a torchlight tour of the gardens by night.

10) Thornton Abbey Gatehouse, near Ulceby, is the largest and among the finest of all English monastic gatehouses and one of the wealthiest English Augustinian monasteries.
