WARRIORS from history went into battle in the centre of York, as the city's Jorvik Viking Festival came to a fiery conclusion.
Hundreds of people gathered at the Eye of York to watch the hordes of soldiers simulate battle scenes on Saturday during the final events of the 23rd annual celebration of York's Norse heritage.
The conflict was part of a spectacular light and sound show which included the traditional burning of a Viking boat, with the public also getting the chance to meet the warriors, see weapons used in blockbuster Hollywood movies and take a late-night trip around the Jorvik Viking Centre.
The festival ended yesterday with an open day at the Hungate excavation site, and a coach tour around North Yorkshire churches ravaged by Viking King Harald Hardrada.
