BURGER King has announced the closure of another of its York restaurants, while a new fast food retailer is set to move into its former city centre premises.

The burger operator has confirmed its Bilborough Top outlet, on the A64, closed its doors to the public on Wednesday.

The restaurant is the second Burger King outlet to shut in as many months in the city.

In June, The Press reported how the chain's flagship High Ousegate outlet had closed.

And last October, 20 staff at the Monks Cross outlet - operated by Cairnserve Ltd - lost their jobs when the restaurant suddenly closed.

Burger King now has two remaining outlets in the city - at Clifton Moor and York Railway Station.

Now Nando's, the chicken restaurant famous for its Peri-Peri chilli sauce, has lodged a planning application with City of York Council to put up a new illuminated shop front at the High Ousegate property.

A Nando's spokeswoman confirmed plans existed but said proposals to open a restaurant on the site were in the initial stages.

She said work would start on the premises next week and the restaurant would be ready to open in mid to late September.

A Burger King spokeswoman said: "Burger King can confirm the Bilborough restaurant in Tadcaster, operated by PT Retail Specialists, has closed.

"As part of the normal course of business, some restaurants close when locations and operations are no longer viable.

"At the same time, we continue to look for operations to grow our estate where it makes economic sense for us to do so."

A relative of a worker at the Bilborough Top restaurant, who asked not to be named, said: "I don't know exactly how many staff the outlet employed, but that isn't the point.

"It's the loss of yet more jobs for the youth of York.

"My son has worked there for quite a long time, and mostly enjoyed it. He is confident he will find other employment, and I have no doubt he will; he is a conscientious and hard worker."
