Unsure where to start at the York Beer and Cider Festival? Bewildered by the choice of more than 450 beers?
We're here to help..... two local beer writers Gavin and Nick have picked out 9 personal recommendations well worth trying - four each, and one that they both chose.
For full festival details, visit the official website.
1) Mallinsons Amarillo (4.2%) - I have lots of respect for this all female brewing team that consistently deliver great beers with mouthfuls of flavour. This hoppy beer has orange overtones with a crisp dry finish. (Nick)
__________
2) York Brewery Moors-ish (4%) - This is brewed using heather from the North York Moors, and it is a delicious floral beer. Was launched just a few days ago. (Gavin)
__________
3) Tapped Franz (6.2%) - This is one of four festival beers brewed locally by Camra members. This one is an IPA-style beer with Vienna Malt and is the the first cask beer ever to be sold outside the brewery bar. It's named after Franz Ferdinand, whose death led to the First World War 100 years ago. (chosen by both Gavin and Nick)
__________
4) Hammerton N7 (5.2%) - This is from a new London brewery and is refreshing pale ale with US & New Zealand hops giving citrus and marmalade flavours and a hoppy nose. (Nick)
__________
5) All Hallows Wayward Angel (3.6%) - This is one of the beers from a cracking little pub-brewery in Goodmanham - and at 3.6 per cent, it will be a good starting point for anyone. (Gavin)
__________
6) Half Moon Dark Masquerade (3.6%) - This East Yorkshire brewery has produced several stunning beers since launching in Ellerton last December, none better than this - it's a dark, rich, smooth beer with liquorice and chocolate flavours. (Gavin)
__________
7) Sunbeam Plum Porter (6.6%) - This is from a microbrewery in Leeds and is a wonderfully rich porter with hints of Dundee Cake. (Nick)
__________
8) Waen Snowball (7%) - Cocoa nibs, vanilla pods and toasted coconut are used in the brewing process for this luscious dark stout, from Powys in Wales. (Nick)
__________
9) Great Yorkshire Chocolate Orange (6%) - Blackout by Great Yorkshire (formerly Cropton) is an old favourite but alongside it this year will be this souped-up version with a fantastic bitter, zesty twist. (Gavin)
