CAVA might hail from there but for some reason you don't otherwise find too many still wines in our supermarkets coming from the distinctive, standalone Catalonia region of Spain.

Well, after watching Pep Guardiola, one of the world's most famous Catalans, guide Manchester City into the last 32 of the Champions League, and seeing the great Barcelona team finish top of the same group, we figured it time to try a couple such wines in tribute.

As luck would have it, we were in Tesco at the time we had this thought and, as even more luck would have it, we quickly found two Catalonian tipples hiding among a load of Rioja.

As yet more luck would have it, one was on discount offer and both, unlike Man City's players, were bargains - one a red, one a white, and both coming from the highly-rated producer Miguel Torres, surely one of Europe's better brands.

"My dream," says an old quote from Miguel Torres Carbo as written on the label of the Torres Sangre de Toro, "is that our region's wine is known and recognised for its quality around the world."

It's not just Catalonian football teams that have this wish then.

This 2015 vintage of the Sangre de Toro, made from Garnacha (Grenache) and Carignan grapes, does that wish no harm at all.

Just as the little Barcelonians are gentle on the eye, creative all over the pitch and quick in possession, this red is gentle on the tastebuds, creative with an unexpected touch of licorice, and rather quick to go down.

Similarly, while Barca's forwards are potent like little assassins, so too is this tipple, coming in at 13.5 per cent but having a freshness and quaffability of a wine half its size.

It's a deep cherry red colour, with aromas of dark berries, notes of ripe dried plum and roasted coffee, and a warm succulent palate. It's on at £7.

On the white aisle, meanwhile, is a sister wine, the Torres Vina Sol 2015, on offer this weekend at £5.50, down from £7.

This bright, pale yellow wine of Parellada and Grenache Blanc grapes, with its fresh floral aromas, fruit undertones and an exotic note, is not only for the summer months (there's a clue in the name) but also a quaffable one to have while daydreaming of such days.

"In a small cellar in the cool mountains of the Mediterranean," it says on the label as if rubbing it in that it's rainy and cold over here right now, "we fermented local grapes at a low temperature to obtain a wine of remarkable freshness."

Silky on the palate, this light 11.5 per cent tipple is excellent as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to rice dishes, seafood and fish at any time of year.

By the way, Tesco are currently offering 25 per cent off when buying six or more bottles.
