OPENING with Riverman and a Wonderwall chord sequence, Chasing Yesterday isn’t going to break any rules. That’s not to say it’s bad. Noel Gallagher coasting is still more interesting than today’s charts, and when he throws in a curveball – like hints of Pink Floyd-style saxophone, also in Riverman – it is pleasing.

The first single In The Heat Of The Moment is an upbeat driving song let down only by schoolboy trips to the rhyming dictionary. The Girl With The X-Ray Eyes opens like The Masterplan, then widens out. It’s an endemic problem – harking back to Gallagher’s greatest works only shows up the current efforts.

He claims Ballad Of The Mighty I, which closes the album and features Johnny Marr on guitar, is the best thing he’s written. He’s wrong, but it is another attempt to write a Bond theme. A good album, but he’s set himself a high bar to clear.
