SONS Of Bill are Bill Wilson’s sons Abe, James and Sam Wilson, who play classic roots rock with chums from Charlottesville, Virginia.

Dad William Wilson schooled his boys in music from an early age through his love of playing music and singing, so thank you Bill, because Love And Logic is a gem. It turns out to be their fourth album, suffused with pedal steel, banjo, three-part harmonies and lyrical southern tales. Produced by Uncle Tupelo and Wilco drummer Ken Coomer, it evokes the early alt.country of both those bands with echoes of The Jayhawks and early REM too.

Such comparisons may suggest a lack of distinction but the songwriting is of the highest pedigree, typified by Bad Dancer, a song of young love, parental expectations and trying to fit in, while Fishing Song takes you blissfully down to river. If you missed their Leeds gig last night, you should drive up to the Cluny in Newcastle tomorrow. Recommended.
