York Theatre Royal is offering a chance to be involved in a professional production on the main stage in July.

“We’re looking for enthusiastic people to take part in Anthony Minghella’s Two Planks And A Passion, in which they will perform alongside the actors of the In The Round Ensemble season,” says Rebecca Storey, the theatre’s press and media manager.

Minghella’s play tells the story of what happened in 1392 when King Richard II came to York to see the Mystery Plays. “This touching comedy gives great insight into where the strong community feeling around York’s Mystery Plays comes from,” says Rebecca.

“We want to continue these traditions by taking on a community cast and production team to work alongside the company from York Theatre Royal and Riding Lights Theatre Company, who are co-producers of this summer’s show.”

This joint production is only one step towards the new open-air staging of the York Mystery Plays at St Mary’s Abbey, Museum Gardens, in August 2012, when the Theatre Royal and Riding Lights will work together again.

Open auditions for Two Planks will be held on Thursday at 6.30pm and next Saturday at 11.30am in the De Grey Rooms, next to the Theatre Royal. “There’s no need to pre-register; just turn up on the day,” says Rebecca.

Auditions will be held in groups and will last no longer than two hours from the scheduled start time. Those who are successful must be available to rehearse from the beginning of April and be free for the performances from July 1 to 16.

“Main parts, ensemble parts, speaking or non-speaking, whatever your experience, come along and meet us at the two open audition dates,” says Rebecca.

Anyone who would like to be involved in an off-stage area of the production, such as costume making, set or prop building, lighting, stage management or front of house, should email mysteryplays2012@yorktheatreroyal.co.uk or phone 01904 550174.
