THE Vienna Festival Ballet returns to York to perform the most famous of all fairytale ballets, The Nutcracker.

Tchaikovsky’s enchanting score captures the spirit of Christmas Eve as night falls, whereupon the audience is transported to a fantasy world where toy dolls come to life, an army of soldiers does battle with a gang of mice and a Nutcracker is transformed into a handsome prince.

Under artistic director Peter Mallek, who trained in Vienna in the Russian style, the Vienna Festival Ballet has been touring Britain with ballets such as Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Giselle and Cinderella since 1999.

Tickets are still available for Thursday’s performance on 0844 847 2322 or online at grandoperahouseyork.org.uk
