The Soper family, from Alne, near Easingwold, is fully occupied with rehearsals and preparations for York Opera’s production of Verdi’s Macbeth at York Theatre Royal.

Once again, John and Maggie Soper are the guiding force behind the visual side of the production, John designing sets and publicity material while Maggie designs and makes the costumes.

Over many years of involvement with the company, both have played principal roles or been stalwart members of the chorus.

For the performances on October 13, 14, 16 and 17, they will be joined on stage by their 15-year-old daughter, Laura. This is not the first time Laura has taken part in a York Opera production, but Macbeth will mark her debut in a solo singing role.

“I’ll be appearing in Act 3 of the opera as the 3rd Apparition conjured up by the witches, who appears to give comfort to Macbeth, telling him that he will not be defeated ‘until Birnam Wood shall come to Dunsinane’” says Laura, who attends Easingwold School.
