AFTER taking the Yorkshire stage by storm in The Bodyguard in May, soul singer Alexandra Burke will return to Leeds Grand Theatre this month in a new production of Sister Act directed by Craig Revel Horwood.

Based on the 1992 movie starring Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith, Sister Act tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, a disco diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a murder.

Under protective custody, she is hidden in the one place she will not be found: a convent. Disguised as a nun and under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own.

Playing in Leeds from August 22 to 27, Sister Act features songs by Alan Menken and is directed and choreographed by BBC1's Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood with musical supervision and arrangements by Tony Award winner Sarah Travis.

Alexandra Burke will play Deloris Van Cartier at all evening performances, while the matinees will be in the hands of nun other than Joanna Francis, switching from her evening role as Michelle.

Jon Robyns will be Eddie; Karen Mann, Mother Superior; Rosemary Ashe, Sister Mary Lazarus; Aaron Lee Lambert, Curtis; Sarah Goggin, Sister Mary Robert; Susannah Van Den Berg, Sister Mary Patrick; Allison Harding, Sister Mary Theresa; Ricky Rojas, Pablo; Samuel Morgan-Grahame, Joey, and Sandy Grigelis, TJ.

Burke rose to fame after winning the fifth series of The X Factor and played Rachel Marron, the "Whitney Houston role" in The Bodyguard, both on the national tour and in the West End.

Craig Revel Horwood's credits as a director and choreographer take in Sunset Boulevard at the Comedy Theatre in the West End, national tours of Fiddler On The Roof, Spend Spend Spend and Chess, plus Watermill Theatre productions of The Witches Of Eastwick, Martin Guerre and Copacabana in Newbury. He last starred on stage as Miss Hannigan in the national tour of Annie.
