YORK’s very own production of the West End classic Oliver! enchanted young and old alike at the close-to-full audience at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre on its opening night.

The amateur company New Earswick Musical Society tell the epic story of Oliver Twist in a full-hearted and energetic show, re-creating the precarious and unsafe atmospheres of London’s Victorian streets.

Under the direction of Ann McCreadie, the well-rehearsed performance comes together thanks to an enthusiastic cast and the smiles, mimicry and faces of the talented children actors in the role of Fagin’s boys and girls. Despite some singing at times being a little croaky in the higher notes, the well-known ensemble songs make up for any small technical difficulties. The nuances of voices produces powerful and uplifting scenes, thoroughly enjoyed by the audience by the sound of the applause.

Designed by Robert Readman, the set of flights of stairs and various doors and entrances effectively set the scene for the characters’ intertwined stories.

In the role of Oliver, Sam Roberts matches the part perfectly, conveying the boy’s angelic and naive character. A special mention is deserved by Steven Tearle, whose interpretation of Fagin’s penny-pinching but paternal figure is delightful. His long and voluminous dress has been meticulously chosen to convey this complex but endearing character.

Fagin’s lair is a vibrant and mysterious space where most of the show’s best scenes are set. The songs You’ve Got To Pick A Pocket Or Two and Fagin’s Reviewing The Situation” are colourful highlights.

The orchestra, conducted by Tom Marlow, are flawless and carry the show through the set changes in a smooth and enjoyable manner. From the children’s workhouse, to the London street and the meeting with the Artful Dodger, all the way to Nancy’s final love declaration, beautifully sung by Catherine Bonello, the show gains in intensity and the energy remains high.

It was a successful first night for the company and the public can’t get enough of this cult story as it continues to ask for a little bit more. Tomorrow night’s show has sold out already, but tickets are still available for tonight and tomorrow’s matinee.
