Keatley’s 1985 play follows the lives, loves and losses of four women and sets the social changes of the 20th century against the women’s basic desires to love and be loved. As the story weaves in and out of each woman’s generation and situation, secrets are revealed that will change their mother/daughter relationships forever.

“The play has only four characters, all of whom are female, and these characters appear at various stages of their lives throughout the play, as well as in different geographical locations,” said director Jolley Gosnold, introducing Doris, Margaret’s mother, born in Oldham in 1900; Margaret, Jackie’s mother, born in Cheadle Hulme in 1931; Jackie, Rosie’s mother, born in London in 1952; and Rosie, born in Manchester in 1971.

“The audition will be run as a workshop where we’ll explore the text and characters together as a group. The workshop will help you discover the characters, as well as help us to cast the production. At the end of the workshop, we’ll ask if there was a particular character you connected with most or you felt was the most suitable for you to be cast as.”

Performances will run at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York, from June 12 to 14 at 7.30pm.
