THREE places are still to be filled for next month’s Musical Play In A Week at the National Centre for Early Music in York.

Written by Cathryn Dew and directed by Paul Birch, Trooper Jane will be mounted from August 12 to 16, with daily sessions from 10am to 4pm, culminating in a 7pm performance for family and friends on the Friday.

This summer school project is suitable for nine to 14 year olds interested in singing, making music on any instrument or acting. “No previous experience is required; just enthusiasm and commitment,” says Paul.

Based on a true story, the adventures of Trooper Jane are set during the turbulent times of the English Civil War when Jane Ingilby lived a quiet, comfortable life in Ripley Castle until the war turned her world upside down.

As the fighting draws ever closer, threatening her family and friends, Jane finds herself embroiled in the conflict. Determined to protect those she holds dear, Jane resolves to stand up for her principles, whatever the cost. Her adventures take her into the heart of battle and face-to-face with her enemy, Roundhead leader Oliver Cromwell himself.

Delma Tomlin, the NCEM director, says: “This will be our 14th musical play and it’s always a fantastic week. The young people have great fun and make new friends, as well as working really hard to stage a first-class production at the end of the week.”

The fee is £100 per child. To book a place, phone 01904 658338 or download the booking form and book online at ncem.co.uk/mp2013
