Bad news Croods fans – plans for a sequel to the animated adventure have been axed.

Prehistoric-set cartoon film The Croods was a hit for DreamWorks Animation in 2013 and a follow-up has been long in the making, with new writers Kevin and Dan Hageman only just hired in August.

But now, plans for The Croods 2 have been permanently shelved with sources, according to Variety, saying it had been a troubled project for a while.

DreamWorks Animation recently moved from 20th Century Fox to Universal Pictures, but apparently even before the studio went to its new home there were problems in finding the right story to move the action along.

The film had an all-star voice cast including Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Nicolas Cage and Catherine Keener, and had been due to open its second instalment in cinemas in December 2017.

Universal has a number of other animations in the pipeline with DreamWorks Animation, including a revival of the Shrek franchise, How To Train Your Dragon 3 slated for 2018, The Boss Baby and Captain Underpants for 2017, and Australia-set adventure Larrikins.
