Absolutely Fabulous’s Edina Monsoon is set to play grandma to a stroppy teenager in the upcoming big screen adaptation.

Edina, played by Jennifer Saunders, is sure to feel put out at having her glamorous credentials being ruined by being granny to an older child, and one that sounds like she could give as good as she gets from her outrageous family.

The film’s production team are currently casting for a mixed-race 13-year-old girl to play the role of Saffy’s daughter, according to the Radio Times.

According to the spec for the role, it sounds like the newest addition to the Monsoons could take after her grandmother more than her mother Saffy (Julia Sawalha) as it says they are looking for someone who is “self-assured and cool and naturally finds her mother embarrassing but her Granny amuses her”.

Also returning for the film is Joanna Lumley, who will resume her role as Patsy Stone for the feature which will be called Edina and Patsy.

The BBC programme which followed fad-obsessed PR guru Edina and alcohol-soaked magazine editor Patsy ran for five series between 1992 and 2003, and has returned for various special episodes.

Recently, Jennifer told the Jonathan Ross Show that she had finished writing the script after a bet with her comedy partner Dawn French: “Did I tell you that I’d had a bet with Dawn that I would have to pay her £10,000 if I didn’t produce [the film] by the end of the year?

“We had a live radio show at the end of [last] year so I produced a first draft by [then]. I literally vomited it out. On New Year’s Eve it came out.”

Dawn French is set to make an appearance in the film, Rebel Wilson has been given a role after asking to be involved, and various people from the fashion world are expected to crop up, including Cara Delevingne.
