TEN years together and twice winners of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Duo, Spiers & Boden play a sold-out gig at the National Centre for Early Music in York on Monday at 7.30pm.
Loud and proud at the forefront of 21st century English folk, they combine John Spiers’ melodeon and concertina with Jon Boden’s fiddle, guitar and foot percussion to create myriad textures around traditional story songs and dance tunes.
If you are too late to acquire a seat for Monday, Spiers and Boden will be returning to York on April 27 as part of the 11-piece folk juggernaut Bellowhead at the Grand Opera House. Edging into world music, jazz, rock and music hall, their songs are often bawdy and invariably anarchic, as can be heard on last year’s album, Hedonism, recorded at Abbey Road Studios with legendary producer John Leckie.
Tickets are still available for Bellowhead’s 7.30pm show on 0844847 2322 or grandoperahouse.co.uk
