WINTER will be coming early to the North York Moors - but hopefully they won't leave their audience feeling cold.

The band draw on rock, pop, Americana, folk, roots and blues in a fusion which, according to Farndale venue The Band Room's Big Mark, is "as powerful as anything around right now".

The Band Room operates a simple quality-control system, says Mark. "Everyone who plays the Band Room must have released at least one critically-acclaimed album".

Winter had recorded two tremendous CDs before their first Band Room gig. "So we knew (they) were going to be good. But we had no idea they were going to be this good," says Mark. "On the night they played The Band Room they virtually blew us away."

It is Anna-Lena's clever, incisive lyrics and charismatic stage presence that makes the band so memorable, Mark says.

"She opened for Bob Dylan in Scandinavia and influence-wise you can hear bits of Lucinda Williams, 10,000 Maniacs and Fleetwood Mac. But the band's origins are so skilfully assimilated it's impossible to pinpoint exactly where all this comes from."

You'll be able to try when the band play The Band Room on Bank Holiday Monday, August 28.
