INDUS launch their debut album, Firefly, tonight when the four north of England instrumentalists with diverse musical roots perform in York.

Audience members at the NCEM will have the chance to buy copies autographed by santoor player John Ball, sitar player Mohamed Assani, flautist Henrik Linnemann and tabla player Shahbaz Hussain.

Indus conjoin Indian, Western and jazz music to create new approaches to music-making and to explore the full potential of their instruments.

Their concert performances combine carefully crafted arrangements and compositions with free-flowing passages of improvisation and interplay as they “endeavour to navigate through uncharted musical terrain while embracing the rich musical tapestry of India and Pakistan”.

In a second concert at the NCEM in the week ahead, the Black Swan Folk Club presents folk fiddler and singer Jackie Oates on Monday at 7.30pm. She came to prominence with Rachel Unthank & The Winterset before winning the Best Newcomer and Best Traditional Track prizes at this year’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Accompanied by guitarist James Dumbleton and other musicians, she is on tour to promote her third album of English ballads and songs, Hyperboreans. For tickets, phone 01904 658338 or book online at www.ncem.co.uk
