Laid back, effortless playing and personable banter was the order of the night as guitar virtuoso Newton Fauklner played to an enthusiastic full house. Faulkner made a modest entrance, guitar in one hand and tea in the other.

This was going to be an intimate gig.

He started the night with I Took It Out On You from his latest album, Rebuilt By Humans.

The second he started strumming the first notes the audience ignited with cheers of excitement.

It’s fair to say Faulkner’s excellent playing is matched entirely by his soulful, husky voice.

To the audience’s delight, he made it clear he would be playing a mixture of old and new tracks.

He spent half his time standing up centre stage, and the other half sat down in front of a screen which projected animage of his feet while he played, triggering samples of strings, bass drum or synth.

He joked that this was probably too much insight into his sparetime, but was actually a clever showcase of his alternative approach.

The show was interval-free which meant it felt relentless and repetitive at times. Having said that, Faulkner did not disappoint the crowd of avid an responsive fans. Considering he is only one man and a guitar with two hours and a big venue to fill, he held the room in a Bill Bailey-esque fashion, with endearing comical stories and a well-devised stage set including comic videos and a dancing alien.

The night passed with hits like Dream Catch Me and Gone In The Morning, both of which prompted an atmospheric audience sing-a-long.
