Ten years before anyone imagined what Propellerheads or Jamiroquai might sound like, the James Taylor Quartet were producing sleazy cop-show tunes with a smart mixture of Doors’ B3 Hammond organ, some big old trumpets and a sizeable smirk.

“You don’t even need to close your eyes to imagine the smell of burning rubber on Tarmac, the wail of sirens and the screech of getaway cars taking corners on two wheels,” says Tim Hornsby, of The Duchess, where Taylor and co play tonight.

These jazz-friendly Mod squad groovers, whose music spawned the term “acid jazz”, collaborated with Tom Jones on Looking Out My Window and appeared on the Austin Powers soundtracks.

Taylor’s soul-jazz and stinging instrumental brass funk style started with mod-revival band The Prisoners and continues to this day, as vintage yet as original as ever.
