CO-PRODUCED by Les Miserables alumni Scott Garnham, from Ryedale, and Simon Schofield, The Barricade Boys took to the Grand Opera House stage, offering show tunes, swing music and pop songs with a Broadway twist on their first ever tour on Wednesday.

Between them, the four-man group have starred in a veritable plethora of beloved musical theatre smash-hits, including Wicked, The Phantom Of The Opera, Jersey Boys and, naturally, Les Miserables.

Right from the off, there was no denying the talent and tenacity that The Barricade Boys brought to the stage. As a group, their excellent harmonies, startling range, impeccable style and infectious sense of fun all contributed to a great feel-good atmosphere.

Individually, as seen in the various solo performances, each was able to showcase the best of their respective abilities, as befitted a team of seasoned performers.

The changed-up the style they put on many of the iconic numbers they performed, such as their delightfully creative swing music version of Master Of The House, only further elevated what was already exceptionally good.

The Barricade Boys were far from the only stars of the show, however. Guest singer Lauren Hood, from Ryedale, enthralled the York audience with her rendition of Cilla Black’s You’re My World, while the members of the Kirkham Henry Performing Arts Centre - where Garnham started as a performer - shone in Close Every Door and A Million Dreams.

All in all, The Barricade Boys are a genuine treat for anyone with a love for musicals, combining experience, talent and an endearingly irreverent inventiveness that transforms what might otherwise be just another cabaret act into something unique and special.
