THE Prima Vox and Prima Cantica choirs unite for an evening of classical and spiritual music at the Bar Convent Chapel, Blossom Street, York, tonight (June 16).

"We're presenting a summer choral delight, Music Down In My Soul, in York's beautiful hidden chapel, nestled in the heart of the country’s oldest living convent," says musical director Ewa Salecka.

The Prima Vox a cappella choir has been delivering a refreshing programme of contemporary choral music in York for two years now with an outside-the-box approach that has led to many collaborations. Tonight's 7.30pm concert bonds the choir with the fresh sound of the Prima Cantica female choir, whose vitality leaves a lasting impression. "If you were thinking about joining a unique female chamber group, this is the perfect chance to hear them perform," says Ewa.

The programme comprises a cappella and accompanied choral music by Paul Mealor, Eric Whitacre, Ola Gjeilo, Maurice Duruflé, Edward Grieg, Camille Saint-Saëns, Randall Thompson and Alexander Kastalsky, among others.

"The multi-layered harmonies of the classical composers will be balanced with the warm, soulful arrangements of traditional spirituals by the master of the genre, Moses Hogan; the entire evening complimented by the perfect acoustics of the 17th century Bar Convent chapel."

Ewa and pianist Greg Birch will not be standing still for long. "Only a few days after this event, Prima Vocal Ensemble will set off on a five-day tour of the Italian Tyrol at the 20th Alta Pusteria Choral Festival, encompassing the Gustav Mahler Hall in Dobbiaco, Congress Hall in Valdaora and the 2,250 metre-high summit of the Plan De Corones," says Ewa. "We're proud as always to represent the city of York abroad."
