THE Academy of St Olave's will present Music For A Midsummer’s Night on June 24 at St Olave’s, Marygate, York, in the York chamber orchestra's final concert of their 2016-17 series.

To mark Midsummer’s Night, the ensemble will perform an appropriately summery 8pm programme, including Mendelssohn’s magical setting of music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Further highlights will be incidental music from Henry Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, another work based on Shakespeare’s famous comedy, as well as two pieces by American composer Samuel Barber that will split the orchestra: Summer Music for wind quintet and the famous Adagio for strings.

Musical director Alan George, long-standing violist with the internationally renowned Fitzwilliam Quartet, says: “When we realised that the concert fell on Midsummer’s Night, we knew it was a fantastic opportunity to present both Purcell and Mendelssohn’s inspired interpretations of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the same programme. Along with two evocative Barber works, we're sure that audience members will go away feeling truly intoxicated with the spirit of summer."

This month's concert will be in aid of Neuroblastoma UK, a charity that provides support for children suffering with neuroblastoma, as well as helping to fund research projects into the diagnosis and treatment of this rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer.

The Academy will be giving a concert at St Olave's for the first time since improvements were made to the church in the form of a new disabled access ramp and an additional loo within the building.

Tickets cost £14, concessions £13, students and children £5 students, at academyofstolaves.org.uk, from Visit York, Museum Street, on 01904 550099 or on the door.
