JACK Savoretti's "incredible opportunity" to appear on BBC1's The One Show at short notice tomorrow evening means his sold-out York gig will be a non-show that night.

The London singer will now play his low-key show at Fibbers on July 16. In a statement released at 5pm on Wednesday, Savoretti said: "I’ve been given an incredible opportunity to appear on national TV this Friday night and therefore have to re-schedule my show at @YorkFibbers to Sunday 16th July. My sincerest apologies to you all who had planned to come down. Your tickets are still valid or refundable."

Rearranged date or not, Fibbers promoter Mr H, alias Tim Hornsby, is looking forward to hosting Savoretti. "Jack's back at Fibbers for an intimate one-off and we’re super-pleased," he says. "His 2015 top ten album, Written In Scars, made Jack a star and now its follow-up, Sleep No More, has sent him stratospheric.

"Definitely not a Clintons Cards/Milk Tray love letter, it’s an impressive songwriting achievement about the very real struggles of holding on to love against the odds. About the trouble, the turmoil and the ultimate realisation that you can’t fight the battles life throws you on your own."

Savoretti and his band are growing in their sense of adventure, reckons Mr H. "Our hero may have started as a lonely acoustic troubadour, relying on not much more than his songs and that careworn growl, but we’re now witnessing a gorgeous widescreen sweep, drawing on a rich Italian heritage, with Morricone-like flourishes and battlefield last stands."

Savoretti’s paternal grandfather was a revered partisan who liberated Second World War Genoa from the Fascists, while his mother’s father was a refugee who fought through war-torn Europe to eventually raise a family in Britain. Savoretti concedes that hearing tales of his family’s heroism has shaped his own stories as a songwriter.

Sleep No More is Savoretti's second top ten album and is heading for gold status, like its predecessor, which sold nearly 200,000 copies. His April 27 appearance at Cheltenham Jazz Festival was broadcast live on BBC Radio 2 and he has released a video, shot by Coldplay and The Maccabees video director Joe Connor, for his latest single, We Are Bound, featuring Savoretti and his band accompanied by aerial artists.

"He's a class act, a modern-day troubadour, a thrilling performer, a giant," sums up Mr H. "We're so thrilled to get Jack to York again and in such an intimate setting."

Doors will open at 7.3pm on July 16. Meanwhile, anyone requiring a refund for the postponed show should phone 01904 848558.
