GLASGOW folk singer-songwriter Al Stewart presents Year Of The Cat, Modern Times & Bed-Sitter Images - Live at York Barbican tomorrow night.

For 50 years, Stewart has been writing and singing songs, and this spring he is touring Britain performing acoustic versions from his musical back pages going all the way back to the bedsit with his 1967 debut, The First Album (Bed-Sitter Images).

Stewart, who once shared a London flat with a young Paul Simon, is accompanied on his Back To The Bedsit Tour by long-time collaborator Dave Nachmanoff and guitarist Tim Renwick.

On his last visit to York Barbican in May 2015, Stewart performed his 1976 album Year Of The Cat in an acoustic guitar trio with Nachmanoff and Renwick, and he particularly enjoys this format. "Sometimes we sound like the Gipsy Kings, sometimes like a rock band," he says. "Doing stripped-down versions of the songs also highlights the lyrics, something that's close to my heart, as one of my bugbears with a full band is that the lyrics can get lost in the big halls."

Last month, Stewart, 71, was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to folk music at the 2017 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards at the Royal Albert Hall, London.

Tickets for his 8pm concert in York are on sale at £43.68 and £39.20 on 0844 854 2757, at yorkbarbican.co.uk or in person from the Barbican box office.
