AT one of the last gigs on their three-month tour to promote their new album Shadows, Belinda O’Hooley and Heidi Tidow show no signs of wearying of their first-class output of songs around topics as varied as strong and inspirational women, the vulnerability of childhood, drinking songs, politics and animals.

Opening with Colne Valley Heart, their tribute to their adopted home in West Yorkshire, the pairing of their voices is as perfect as their personal commitment – they married earlier this year.

Belinda’s light, clear tones soar in and around Heidi’s smokier, deeper delivery, resulting in complex and clever harmonies that sometimes threaten to topple into dissonance.

The highlight of the night was the impassioned Blanke, a superbly written and performed plea about the plight of orphaned baby elephants that brought many of the audience, myself included, to tears, but which was balanced beautifully with their rendition of their wedding song, Small Big Love, and the perfectly formed Needle And The Hand.

They don’t shy away from political themes, either, with Made In England taking on the issue of immigration and Reapers the child abuse scandal in the Roman Catholic Church.

A great night, with great songs and a fantastic performance.
