THE Mahotella Queens, the legendary South African female vocal ensemble, celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2015, and still they show no sign of slowing down.
On Wednesday, Hilda Tloubatla, Nobesuthu Mbadu and the newly crowned Queen Amanda Nokuthula Nkosi, bring the stirring sound of the townships to the Howard Assembly Room at Leeds Grand Theatre.
Blending gospel, rhythm & blues and traditional African styles, their rolling Mbaqanga music combines distinctive vocal harmonies with guitar riffs, a cappella singing and fast-paced dancing.
Tickets for Wednesday's 7.45pm performance are on sale at operanorth.co.uk/productions/mahotella-queens or on 0113 243 9999.
