LUNATIC on Instagram might sound like an inspired name for a band, but lyricist Charles Cave insists it's a real person who lives in a remote cabin and who comments on friends' photos with random numbers from Biblical verse.
So of course his ramblings became the inspiration for doom merchants White Lies' new single Take It Out On Me. Why wouldn't they be?
Trouble is, a chorus of integers didn't prove the most commercial of decisions, so now it's a proper song. And here's the biggest surprise, the band seems to have cheered up a bit. Ponderous, now, rather than lugubrious, with love and the changing nature of relationships taking centre stage over death, death and even more death.
The blatant nicking of Eighties' ideas is still prevalent, of course, but it's all a bit more polished now, more A-ha-esque. With three consecutive UK top five albums already under their belt, the radio-friendly Friends could well be the one to see White Lies finally crack America.
White Lies play Leeds Stylus on November 30
