SUGARCUBES, Björk and Sigur Rós aside, most of Iceland's wealth of talent remains homegrown and home based, but Jóhann Jóhannsson may be the next to break the mould. His first release for the German Leviathan is a grand opus of ethereal electronica and epic orchestral flourishes. With corporate backing this may well reach unexpected ears.

It's also as pixie-fied as any of Ms Guðmundsdóttir's left field offerings and as metaphorical as Hrafnkels saga.

Sparse too, in places. The solo cello on A Deal With Chaos is anything but, while Fragment 1 is soothing enough to attract spa owners looking to replace their whale tapes.

A piano refrain is the constant catalyst and as a whole, the album resolves beautifully. But the idea of telling the poet's complex tale, whether as an Argonaut or in the underworld, without words is stretching things a bit far. Let's just say this would make a perfect accompaniment to Ovid's version of the myth.

After all, Orpheus of Thrace had the ability to charm all living things and even stones with his music. Jóhann Jóhannsson isn't so far off himself.
