THEY wear more make up than Robert Smith and sport more tattoos than a Premier League footballer, but behind the scary image Tegan and Sara seem quite sweet. Don't let those angelic harmonies fool you, though.
Dig deeper and the ten love songs on Love You To Death have nothing to do with moons in June, but everything to do with that bittersweet roller coaster ride called emotional entanglement. 'I let a little light into the dark. Caused a blackout inside of my heart'. 'Nobody treats me like dirt'. 'It was cruel of me to do what I did to you'. Get the idea?
There can't be too many love songs called White Knuckles either and when the girls sing 'this love ain't made for the faint of heart', you get the feeling they've had their fair share of heartbreak.
That said it's not all unrelenting gloom, the bubblegum melodies are gorgeous and taking the album at face value, it's perfect pop music. Delve further at your peril, though.
