THREE years on from their debut, White Denim return with a terrific tribute to some of the best music of the 1970s.

Essentially a rock album that wears its love of classic guitar rock on its sleeves, the influences here are crystal clear, chief among them Thin Lizzy, Free and a little bit of Led Zeppelin.

Listen to Had 2 Know (Personal), kicking the record off with frantic guitars, clashing cymbals and lyrics about being on the wrong side of town, or Real Deal Momma a fuzzy, bluesy foot tapper.

There are slower numbers too, such as (I’m The One) Big Big Fun, a sleazy, lazy, piece of fun, and the soulful Take It Easy (Ever After Lasting Love), where James Petralli unleashes his inner David McAlmont to great effect.

Songs zip and bounce along with treble-heavy guitars, tuneful but screeching riffs and solos and funky vocals. Stiff is chock full of the kind of music advertised for Father’s Day and proud to be exactly what it wants to be.
