STEVE HARRIS formed his other band, Iron Maiden, in 1975.

They're one of the world's most successful rock bands, selling millions of albums and touring the globe in their own plane. But as they're not touring this year that means his side-project, British Lion, have time for a 22-date tour of Britain's smaller venues, including York's Duchess on Wednesday.

Support comes from hardworking metal band The Raven Age, whose guitarist is one George Harris, Steve's elder son, with Angel In Disgrace a highlight of their well-honed set.

British Lion kick off with This Is My God for a non-stop 90-minute hard rock set by a tightly knit band. From exemplary sound quality to stage backdrops, it's clear that the production values for this gig are notably higher than The Duchess is used to, thanks probably to the success of the “other band”.

While World Without Heaven has a Maiden-esque feel, there's no hint of these being rejected Iron Maiden B-sides, although Steve's trademark galloping basslines are prominent.

Much of the set is taken from British Lion's eponymous 2012 album release, but it also includes new songs such as the excellent Spitfire. These are more straightforward songs than the lengthy, historic pieces that this audience of Maiden fans will be familiar with, but equally well-crafted.

As they conclude with the anthemic Eyes Of The Young, it's visibly evident that both band and audience have really enjoyed themselves, which is a good enough benchmark for anyone.
