York Musical Theatre Company performing When The Lights Go On Again in 2009

YORK Musical Theatre Company are to revive their hit wartime show When The Lights Go On Again at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York, from October 21 to 24 to mark the 60th anniversary year of VE Day.

An introduction evening will be held by director Paul Laidlaw on August 21 from 7pm at The Bay Horse pub in Marygate. "If you’d like to be involved in this special production, all are welcome to come along," says publicity officer Anna Mitchelson. "It’s an opportunity to hear more about the show, chat to director Paul Laidlaw, meet company members and learn more about the auditions."

Devised and directed by Laidlaw, the nostalgic and light-hearted show was first performed in 2009 at the Grand Opera House for one night only, then swiftly brought back by popular demand at York Theatre Royal.

Looking back to the songs and sketches that lightened the dark days of the war, it echoes the shows that would have kept spirits up in the music halls of the day.

Laidlaw has put together a wartime revue that features an American section complete with The Andrews Sisters; a pantomime Come Dancing Cinderella sketch; Max Miller comedy and nostalgic songs for singalongs, such as There’ll Always Be An England, Lili Of The Lamplight and We’ll Meet Again, among many others. York schoolchildren will be involved in the wartime fun too with school songs from the era, complete with evacuation packs.
