MUSICPORT, Whitby's annual celebration of world music, will run from October 16 to 18 in the festival's 16th year.

Established in 2000 to promote live music and music education in Whitby and the surrounding area, the three-day event will present international, regional and East Coast acts in the Whitby Pavilion Complex.

Among the musicians confirmed so far are Fanfara Tirana meets Trans-Global Underground, from Albania and the UK; Dub Colossus, from Ethiopia/UK; Soweto Gospel Choir, from South Africa; The Specials' Terry Hall, doing a DJ set; Tromboronga/Salsa Orchestra, from Spain; and Varldens Band, from Sweden.

In the line-up too are Afrikan (CORRECT) Boy, from Nigeria/UK; Frigg, from Finland; Demon Barbers XL/Najma Ahktar, from India/UK; Duke Special, from Northern Ireland; Kora Band, from USA/UK; Hut People & Jess Morgan; Ben Rogers, from Canada; and Keith James, performing the songs of Nick Drake.

Also taking part will be O'Hooley & Tidow; Maalstroom, from the Netherlands; Will McNicholl & Luke Selby; Richard de Soussa; The Cajun Roosters; Blue Rose Code, from Scotland; Naomi Bedford & Paul Simmonds, and songwriter-in-residence Paul Armfield.

In addition, Musicport will be hosting the Yorkshire Gig Guide Grassroots Awards on the first day, featuring Yorkshire acts on the North Sea Stage. Meanwhile, workshops, comedy and film programmes are still to be confirmed.
