RAPPING poet Dizraeli, the BBC Radio 4 Poetry Slam winner, will perform tomorrow night at a secret location in the latest York By Candlelight soiree organised by budding impresario Phil Grainger.

"Rapper, singer, poet, Dizraeli is the half-daft missionary who forced folk to marry hip-hop and is now scooting into new territories that rappers aren't supposed to enter; plus he's wearing a cycle helmet as he does it," says Phil. "His elastic, unhinged flows run through the supermarkets, love, tenements and rain of England with a sidelong smile and a twist of phrase."

Dizraeli, who also has won the Farrago UK Slam Championships, has written several hip-hop plays, including the award-winningThe Rebel Cell with Canadian rapper, poet and playwright Baba Brinkman.

"Dizraeli is part of the Menagerie, the sprawling Brighton hip-hop collective, and he does all types of collaborations with hip-hop and other artists, such as with the unmatched English folk institution and two-time BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards winner Chris Wood," says Phil.

Support comes from York writer, actor and spoken-word poet Stu Freestone, artistic director of Paper Planes & Daisy Chains Theatre and co-founder of Say Owt Slam, performing tomorrow with Simon Bolley and Phil Grainger. Freestone has just been nominated for best spoken word performer in the Saboteur Awards.

The secret location for tomorrow's 8pm show is a private house in Fetter Lane, York. Only six tickets remain on sale through Phil on 07716 605408 or at phil@gobbledigooktheatre.co.uk
