VILLAGERS, alias Irish songwriter Conor O’Brien, will perform at Leeds City Varieties Music Hall on April 21.

O’Brien will be promoting his third album, Darling Arithmetic, a beautiful, intimate set of songs about love and relationships that follows 2013’s Mercury Prize-nominated Awayland and 2010’s Becoming A Jackal and Awayland, both Mercury-nominated.

Released on April 13, Darling Arithmetic was written, recorded, produced and mixed by O’Brien at home in the loft of a converted farmhouse that he shares in the coastal town of Malahide to the north of Dublin.

The record expresses various shades of feeling, such as desire, obsession, lust, loneliness and confusion, and ventures deeper into philosophical and existential territory, across a cast of lovers, friends, family and even strangers. O’Brien accompanies his vocals with guitar, piano, Mellotron and brushes, playing every instrument on these melodic songs in a sparse, spacious, acoustic setting.

Tickets for his 8pmgig cost £16.60 at cityvarieties.co.uk or on 0113 243 0808.
