FRIDAY the 13th may be unlucky for some, but will be lucky for fans of Slow Club. The Sheffield boy-girl duo of Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor will play Pocklington Arts Centre on Friday, February 13 next year.

Formed in 2005, when guitarist, piano player and singer Watson and stand-up drummer, guitarist and singer Taylor were still teenagers, they spent the next two years touring relentlessly around the north. A support slot with American band Tilly And The Wall then brought them to the attention of Moshi Moshi Records, who released their debut album, Yeah So, in 2009.

Initially categorized as “anti-folk”, the album combined harmonious hooks with rockabilly beats and exuberant yelps, coupled with Watson's bruised vocals and Taylor's echoes of Northern Soul.

Second album Paradise followed in 2011 and this year the duo emerged from the studio with Complete Surrender, an album recorded with producer Colin Elliot, who had helped to create an equally widescreen sound on Richard Hawley's Sheffield albums.

Complete Surrender recalls Tamla Motown, Stax Records and the immaculately produced pop of the 1970s, via Frankie Valli and David Bowie, on songs that leave Slow Club's charmingly ramshackle teenage days way behind in favour of a fully-formed, self-confident sound.

Tickets for the 8pm gig go on sale on Friday morning at £12.50 on 01759 301547 or at pocklingtonartscentre.co.uk
