THE University of York Opera Society will re-imagine Jules Massenet’s fairytale, Cendrillon, through the eyes of a Second World War veteran at the Grand Opera House, York, on June 20.

Directed, produced and performed by members of the university, this semi-professional production will allow more than 100 students to gain experience in their various specialist fields in the 7pm performance.

The production aims to bring a new dimension to the fairytale. Alone in his bookshop, the soldier reads Cinderella while reminiscing about a wartime romance, with only his stories for company.

The soldier takes the audience back to the war he remembers, through the world of Cinderella, where the War Prince reveals his love trials, to the Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm tale.

He pictures everything as if he were in the heart of the war; caring nurses are the fairies helping Cinderella, while the men are presented as soldiers who have taken the King’s shilling.

Cinderella still has a Fairy Godmother to help her go to the ball, although a twist provides a contrast with the 1950 animated Walt Disney fairytale.
