YORK hillbilly band King Courgette – or Le Roi Courgette for a day – are taking part in Friargate Theatre's series of French Fries events to celebrate Le Grand Depart in York.

In the lead-up to the Tour de France, Riding Lights Theatre will mount a programme of music, comedy, poetry and more from tomorrow until July 4, kicking off the Fridays At Friargate diary with the not exactly French KIng Courgette and their bluegrass, blues and Appalachian folk music from les Etats Unis d'Amérique.

The old-time vegetable string band, grown from seed by Poppa Courgette on his Clifton Delta allotment in York, brings together String Bean Slim, Bad Apple Chris, Hot Chilli McGrath and Zucchini Bill (alias Billy Hickling from the percussion show Stomp), who between them play banjos, ukulele, fiddle, washboard and...bones.

Special guest David Ward Maclean, the York singer-songwriter with the Scottish roots, opens the 7.30pm show. Tickets cost £10, concessions £8, on 01904 613000 or at ridinglights.org/french-fries. Visit the same website for the full listings for the French Fries season.
