YORK singing soloists Graham and Richard Kay are joining forces again on Sunday to perform Like Father, Like Son, Another Evening Of Song at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York.

“We were pleased to raise £850 for York Against Cancer last April and having recently lost a couple of friends to this disease, I would dearly love to raise more this year for that charity,” says Richard, the son.

They first sang together back when Richard was a baby, although Richard was a little less tuneful back then.

They then performed together in a York production of Oliver! in 1990, Richard taking the title role to Graham’s Fagin.

After another gap of several years, they began to sing in tandem again with the York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir and last year they performed their own aforementioned concert at a near sold-out Rowntree Theatre.

“Now we’re planning to do it all again; different songs, same bearded men, including the fabulous Malcolm Maddock on the piano, all returning by popular demand,” says Richard.

York’s singing dad and his lad are well known as performers around York, not only with the the York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir.

Graham is a stalwart of the York Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society, now known as the York Musical Theatre Company and has performed extensively as a soloist.

He is perhaps best known for his performances with John Warburton and his appearances over 20 years of Music Night at the Rowntree Theatre.

Richard takes part in those Music Nights too and he has appeared in four of Berwick Kaler’s pantomimes at York Theatre Royal, as well as in other productions around York.

His acting has taken him further afield too, working with Kenneth Alan Taylor at Nottingham Playhouse as well as Tom Conti and Tim Pigott-Smith, to drop but a few names.

Last month Graham and Richard were guest soloists for The Rodillian Singer’s 50th anniversary concert at Wakefield Theatre, alongside Jonathan Ansell.

“We now look forward to entertaining a home crowd on Sunday with a selection of favourite songs old and new at the Rowntree Theatre,” says Richard.

“Add fine support from a certain choir and this promises to be a musical feast not to be missed.”

Tickets for Sunday’s concert, which starts at 7.30pm, cost £8 from the Theatre Royal box office.
