THE YO1 Festival will be spread across eight music stages and more besides when opening 2014's open-air festival season on May 4 at Knavesmire, York.

The third festival will be headlined by De La Soul, the American hip-hop trio from Long Island, New York, who are marking the 25th anniversary of 3 Feet High And Rising.

"As an alternative group known for their quirkiness, De La Soul are the perfect act to headline the YO1 Festival, which is bringing a huge range of artists to York next Sunday, hosting a broad variety of genres from reggae and punk to spoken word and house music," says festival director and organiser John Drysdale.

Electronic musician Sub Focus will be drawing on his influences, ranging from Jean Michel Jarre to The Chemical Brothers and Lindstrom, in A DJ set when topping the line-up on the Night Vision stage. Further highlights will be Danny Howard, host of BBC Radio 1’s Saturday Dance Anthems show; a raucous performance from Pulled Apart By Horses, the Observer's pick for "the greatest live band in Britain"; Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip's mesh of spoken word and hip hop; Waze And Odyssey; GirlsOnDrugs and Mistajam.

Look out too for Ame; Kryder; Bicep; Futuristic Polar Bears; Traams; The Wytches; Menace Beach; Theo Varney; Jacob Plant; The Federals; Boss Caine; Juffage and Grinny Grandad.

The eight stages across the festival site will be hosted by such organisations as Ministry Of Sound, BBC Radio York and the aforementioned Night Vision.

"The addition of the new stages means there really is something for everyone’s taste," says John, adding that YO1 is "much more than a music festival". "Playing all day will be Four Shadows Theatre, a contemporary performance company who bring ambitious and accessible theatre to public spaces," he says.

"The best street food from around Yorkshire and the country will be represented throughout the festival, including Streatza, who serve authentic Neapolitan pizza from their small red truck; the Shambles Kitchen, with their famous piri piri chicken wraps and zingy home-made sauces; and the Chaat Cart, bringing a taste of Indian street food to the north."

YO1 will host a Micro Ale Festival, in association with The House Of Trembling Madness. The Speakeasy Libations Cocktail Bar will provide an alternative for those who prefer their drinks with a touch of vintage sophistication, while Bison Coffee will be on site.

BISON Coffee and York gig promoters Please Please You will host a YO1 After Party at The Duchess, York, on May 4 from 11pm.

On the bill will be York garage band The Federals, who have reunited expressly for the YO1 Festival, plus Jakoby's heady, sampler-based orchestration and the lush one-man pop explosions of Tidals. DJ Basilica Hands will spin his choice of garage, rock, psych, electronic and weird sounds too.

"As our favourite York band from the past ten years, The Federals, are re-forming to play YO1, so we thought we'd double the fun and have them play a post-festival party too," says Please Please You's Joe Coates.

Admission is £2 for YO1 Festival wristband holders; £4 otherwise.
