LOVABLE Londoners Chas & Dave back up October’s release of their first original studio material in 27 years with a 2014 tour that will take in Leeds Grand Theatre on Sunday, April 13.

Chas Hodges and Dave Peacock, pictured, marked their 50th anniversary by resurrecting vintage skiffle, early R&B and rock’n’roll songs alongside new renditions of their own rockney favourites, such as Ain’t No Pleasing You, on an album entitled That’s What Happens.

Issued under a new contract with Warner Music Entertainment, the 12 tracks were recorded in June in Studio 2 at Abbey Road, alias The Beatles Room, with Grammy-winning blues producer Joe Henry, who has worked previously with Solomon Burke, Allen Toussaint, Elvis Costello and Bonnie Raitt.

Special guests on these recordings included pianists Jools Holland and Hugh Laurie, guitarists Albert Lee and Martin Taylor and Buddy Holly And The Crickets drummer Jerry Allison. Chas & Dave began writing and performing songs together in 1972, having been friends since the early Sixties when they were session musicians for the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis and Gene Vincent. They went on to have hits with Gertcha, Ain’t No Pleasing You, Rabbit and Snooker Loopy, as well as writing title songs for the London television shows Till Death Do Us Part and Only Fools And Horses.

Commenting on their return to the studio, the durable duo said: “This is one of the most enjoyable albums we’ve ever done. It was a great week in Abbey Road with top-class musicians and Joe Henry at the helm.

“An un-regimented atmosphere where the ‘room’ worked well alongside the microphone resulted in an album that ran so smooth and joyful that we’ve almost forgotten we did it but we’ve got the proof.”

Tickets for April 13 are on sale at £20 to £29.50 on 0844 848 2700 or at leedsgrandtheatre.com
