TWO of America’s great songwriters, Tom Paxton and Janis Ian, will play the Grand Opera House, York, on March 28 next year on their Together At Last tour.

Although nearly a generation apart, they share ties with the Greenwich Village folk scene, a slew of folk influences and an affinity for tackling controversial issues fearlessly.

Armed only with his acoustic guitar, Tom Paxton emerged in the days of hootenannies and wrote not only protest songs but love songs, humorous songs and songs for children too. At only 15, Janis Ian had a pop hit with the then-provocative Society’s Child, a taboo-busting meditation on an interracial romance. Linking up on the British stage for the first time, Paxton and Ian will sing their best-known songs plus a whole heap more on their Together At Last set list.

“It’s going to be very different from what people might expect,” says Paxton. “It’s not your generic split bill. We take the stage together and we stay on stage together most of the time, singing on one another’s songs.”

Paxton and Ian will be accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Robin Bullock.
