NEXT Sunday evening’s double bill of films at City Screen, York, ponders the question: What relevance does Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violent methods in the struggle for Indian independence have in modern-day India?

Later this year, 100,000 people are expected to march on Delhi to protest against poor people being deprived of their land. An earlier march was captured in the short documentary Non-Violent Action, which shows how the land reform movement uses Gandhi’s principles and tactics like his famous salt march to attain justice. The 6pm screening will be accompanied by a brief talk by Cathy Homan, from the Quakers in York, who has done much for Ekta Parishad, the movement inspired by the action of Gandhi.

Cathy will link Non-Violent Action with the evening’s second film, Gandhi (PG), Richard Attenborough’s multiple Oscar-winning biography of Gandhi from 1982, starring Scarborough actor Ben Kingsley, pictured.

Looking forward to the March 25 event, City Screen’s marketing manager, Dave Taylor, says: “We’re indebted to Hans-Jurg Pfaff for letting us show Non-Violent Action and to Cathy Homan, who will explain further the March For Justice in 2012.”
