THE 2018 Yorkshire Silent Film Festival presents two classic film programmes at the National Centre for Early Music, Walmgate, York, on Sunday.
A triple bill of short films at 4pm features the greatest comedy duo of all time, Laurel and Hardy, in a selection designed to appeal to all the family, and Sunrise: A Song Of Two Humans screens at 6.30pm. Directed by FW Murnau, creator of the unforgettable Nosferatu, this lyrical, fairytale story of love and betrayal, depicted with beautiful camera work, won three Oscars at the first-ever Academy Awards in 1929.
Sunday's screening offers a rare opportunity to see one of the true masterpieces of early cinema, a film that regularly features in top ten lists of the greatest films of all time.
Both films will be accompanied by live music, the hallmark of Yorkshire Silent Film Festival shows. Pianist Jonny Best will be joined by percussionist James Wood for Laurel and Hardy and Sunrise will be accompanied by one of the greatest silent film musicians, harpist Elizabeth-Jane Baldry.
